ALTER WIRT – Bavarian cuisine in Ramersdorf

Old Innkeeper | The Alte Wirt in Ramersdorf is not very inviting from the outside and is also rather inconveniently located near the Salzburg motorway entrance. We know the Alte Wirt because it was frequently visited by acquaintances of ours. We ourselves have eaten there a few times. Getting there by car and parking is not too difficult, and buses also serve the area.

While the house is decorated with lights and ornaments every year during the Christmas season, a typical Bavarian inn usually looks more rustic and cozy from the outside. On the positive side – regarding the establishment itself – it's worth noting that there's a very large and beautifully landscaped beer garden for the summer, which is screened from the road that otherwise runs all the way around it by a fence and plantings.

Well, upon entering, you're greeted by a typical Bavarian restaurant with dark wood paneling, wooden tables, Bavarian decorations, waitstaff dressed in Bavarian attire, beamed ceilings, a large wooden bar in the dining area, and an all-around Bavarian ambiance. The staff is very friendly, and you're served immediately. The extensive menus were presented to us by a friendly, blonde waitress in a dirndl. These include a very well-rounded daily menu, an additional game menu with a wide variety of game dishes (e.g., venison ham, roast goose, wild boar roast, venison medallions, venison roast, hare leg, etc.), and the Standard card – also with many different dishes, such as Kässpatzen, Gemüsepfandl, Brotzeiten, Breznsuppe, Grießnockerl-/Pfannkuchen-/Leberknödelsuppe, Reiberdatschi, Toast Hawaii, Rotbarsch-/Zanderfilet, etc.

From the daily specials menu, we chose a pumpkin cream soup made with Hokkaido pumpkin, homemade apple and ginger chutney, and a prawn skewer for €6.50; from the game menu, a game cream soup with wild mushrooms and a dollop of cream for €4.90; a veal Wiener Schnitzel with fried potatoes, green salad, and cranberries for €16.80; a game platter with various game specialties on egg noodles with wild mushroom sauce, cranberry pear, and mixed salad for €19.90; and the baked mushrooms with market salad for €9.80 from the standard menu.

The filling pumpkin soup was intensely flavorful and delicious, especially when paired with the shrimp skewer and chutney. The venison cream soup was also very delicate and flavorful, and the portion was ample. All the main courses were delicious, plentiful, and exactly what you'd expect from good Bavarian food. The venison was very tender and well worth the price. We couldn't even finish the breaded mushrooms, given the large portion, but they were incredibly tasty despite the dish's simplicity. The waitress accidentally brought the side salad for the Wiener Schnitzel twice and then even gave us the second one for free.

In total, including tip, we paid 79 euros for four main courses and an appetizer. Card payments are accepted at the Alte Wirt.

On a previous visit to the Alte Wirt, we ate the apple fritters (for the Bavarians: Apfekiachal) and were very satisfied. Perfectly sweet and exactly as you'd imagine them. A good portion for €5.20.

I would definitely recommend the Alte Wirt, though perhaps not if you're looking for a slightly more upscale location and a cozy atmosphere is important to you. The food and staff are really very friendly. Give it a try if you're ever in the area.

I'll be back: Yes, a very good place to go for good Bavarian food.
