INN IN THE OBERBRÄU – Markt Schwaben – Bavarian

Wirtshaus im Oberbraeu

Inn at Oberbräu A while ago, I was in Markt Schwaben again for lunch. I really like this area, both for its natural beauty and its restaurants, and that's why I'm there quite often now for a delicious meal. Recently, I was drawn to the Wirtshaus im Oberbräu, which opened in 2010. It offers Bavarian cuisine, friendly service, a cozy atmosphere, and fine Bavarian food. The Wirtshaus im Oberbräu is particularly distinguished by its extensive selection of vegetarian and even vegan dishes. Somewhat unusual and not what you might expect from the name of the restaurant, but a great insider tip for all meat lovers, as well as vegetarians and vegans.

Selection of dishes at the Oberbräu inn

With such a wide selection, choosing isn't easy. As mentioned, there are also more vegetarian options than is typical in other Bavarian inns. During our visit, we opted for a mix of vegetarian and meat dishes. To start, we tried "Crostini Bavarese"—gratinated bread with Obatzda (a Bavarian cheese spread), chili, cucumber, and onion (€3.50). A delightful introduction, slightly spicy, and a nice touch with the fresh, crusty bread. This was followed by a traditional Bavarian pancake soup, which was the soup of the day during our visit (€3.90). I personally love pancake soup, especially because it's so simple yet delicious. And that's exactly what we found at the Oberbräu inn: a simple but excellent pancake soup to start with.

For my main course, I chose one of the vegetarian dishes, while my companion opted for a classic roast beef with onions, served with fried potatoes and onion gravy (€19.80, or €13.40 for a smaller portion). I selected the legendary bread dumpling carpaccio with sautéed oyster mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, arugula, and Parmesan cheese (€10.90), a dish that, as the owner later told me, is an indispensable part of the menu. Alternatively, there was an "Old Bavarian Bread Dumpling Casserole" with creamed mushrooms and a flavorful cheese topping (€9.90), but that seemed a bit too rich for me. As mentioned, the choice wasn't easy, but we were both very happy with our selections. As you can see from the pictures, the presentation at the Oberbräu inn is definitely a key element of the dining experience. It didn't just look appetizing, it tasted absolutely delicious. The carpaccio was certainly unusual, but simply superb. Definitely try it on your next visit – perhaps share it as a (generous) appetizer. Combined with the oyster mushrooms and the wafer-thin Parmesan, the satisfyingly thin dumpling slices were a completely new taste experience for me. The onion roast beef was classic, very refined, and perfectly portioned. The accompanying fried potatoes were quite crispy, a touch too dark for my taste. So, if you prefer them a little softer and lighter, you can mention this – as you can with any requests regarding individual dishes – to the friendly staff. Yes…and because we weren't full after the appetizer and two main courses ;-), we also had a – and I can honestly say – sensational Kaiserschmarrn with fresh berries and plum compote (for €10.80 or €8.50 for the small portion and €3 for the very small portion). You absolutely must try it – even if you have to roll home afterwards.

The Oberbräu inn combines classic country-style cuisine with innovative dishes for meat-eaters, vegans, and vegetarians. The menu features Bavarian classics like Wiener Schnitzel, Cordon Bleu (homemade!), Zwiebelrostbraten (roast beef with onions), and Böfflamott (a traditional beef stew), as well as two different burgers, game dishes, rump steak, and a rotating selection of vegan and meat-free options (e.g., baked potatoes, South Tyrolean Spätzle, mushroom salad, etc.). Everything is cooked fresh and made in-house. The Markt Schwaben regional market is right next door, allowing the inn to use many, if not all, regional ingredients, ensuring freshness and high quality.

Ambiance and hard facts

The Oberbräu inn is located directly on the market square in Markt Schwaben. It's quiet, cozy, and inviting. Upon entering, you're greeted warmly, invited to choose a table, and given the menu as well as the current weekly specials. We were given a comfortable and, thanks to the lovely weather that day, even sunny spot in the corner, with a good view of the entire restaurant. All the tables were beautifully decorated, with fresh flowers everywhere, spring-like decorations on the windowsills, and an overall cozy atmosphere that immediately made me feel at ease. The Bavarian-style inn seats 100 people inside, and the large outdoor area in front can accommodate another 80 people when fully seated in the summer. (However, please note that in summer, when the terrace is busy, the main room where my companion and I ate is closed to fully concentrate on the 80 guests outside.) In winter, a rustic (and mobile, as well as rentable) alpine hut stands in the market square instead of chairs and tables, offering space for up to 50 people. A cozy atmosphere is therefore guaranteed both outside and inside the Oberbräu.

My personal conclusion

A visit is definitely worthwhile. The service was attentive and friendly. The food was delicious, and the portions were generously sized for the price. The ambiance is typically Bavarian, bright, and welcoming. During our visit, there was a large group (…the inn or the alpine hut can be rented for events…) who occupied three large, separate tables. Not only our group, but this large group as well, always had everything at their table, glasses full, and everyone looked satisfied with the food, which also looked very appetizing. You can taste and feel the passion that goes into cooking and preparation here. I highly recommend a visit to the Wirtshaus im Oberbräu. Parking is no problem. Card payments are accepted. Oh, and look forward to summer – they have freshly made ice cream from pure fruit.
