Kerala is a South Indian restaurant in Bogenhausen with exceptionally delicious and authentic Indian cuisine. It's located near the Käfer delicatessen in Munich. I've been there several times with my companions when I've specifically been craving South Indian food. This cuisine differs from North Indian cuisine in both its ingredients and the variety of dishes available. Kerala offers a wide selection, providing an opportunity to discover and fall in love with South Indian cuisine.
As mentioned, we've eaten there several times and each time received excellent food served by very friendly – and of course, Indian – staff. The dishes are prepared by former Indian chefs from 5-star restaurants – always in ample portions with fresh ingredients and, upon request, never too spicy.
Kerala has a very extensive and well-balanced menu: soups, salads, appetizers, chicken, lamb and duck dishes, meat and fish dishes, vegetarian dishes, dosa (typical South Indian, with a wide variety of fillings and a real must-try if you're there. Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner – always delicious), biryani, tandoori, thalis, side dishes and desserts.
On most of our visits to Kerala, we opted for the Masala Dosa – a kind of thin, crispy "pancake" (the batter itself isn't sweet), cooked on a round cast-iron griddle – incredibly flavorful thanks to the choice of fillings and sauces. It's also extremely filling, but not too heavy. The dosa is usually filled with potato, but also with chicken, lamb, vegetables, cheese, tomatoes, onions, duck breast, etc., and costs between €9.50 and €12.50 in Kerala – not exactly cheap, but still reasonable for Munich.
Those who don't like dosa can, as mentioned, choose from dozens of other dishes. On a previous visit, my companion and I, for example, chose Valpalam Palkatti – fresh Indian cheese – homemade – with banana slices and cashew nuts in a delicately spiced tomato sauce (for €10.50). It sounds a bit unusual, but it was excellent and a great combination of fresh ingredients. Kerala also offers a very extensive selection of vegetarian dishes between €9.50 and €10.50. However, I definitely recommend the Masala Dosa and, as a starter, the Vegetable Pakora – fresh vegetables coated in chickpea flour batter and served with various dips (for €4.80) or the Idly with Sambhar (for €6.50) – two fritters made from rice and lentil flour served with three different chutneys and Sambhar.
The lunch menu at Kerala is available Monday to Friday between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm: a main course with a choice of either the soup of the day or a small salad. Lunch dishes Prices range from €6 to a maximum of €10.90 – certainly not cheap for a lunch menu, but quite reasonable for Indian cuisine in Bogenhausen.
The ambiance at Kerala is very cozy, and we immediately felt at ease. It's not nearly as "dusty" and "outdated" as is unfortunately often the case in Indian restaurants. Yellow walls, heavy red curtains hung elaborately at the large windows, Indian pictures on the walls, subtle lighting throughout the restaurant, cozy, divided dining areas with dark wooden partitions, white tablecloths, red candles on the tables, banana plants in the dining area, and quiet Indian (terrible, but inaudible) music in the background. Of course, there's also a Buddha statue at the entrance and Indian elephant figurines on the windowsills. 😉 (Incidentally, you won't find these in typical Indian restaurants; they're more likely placed there for the sake of an Indian feel for us Germans).
The service was also very friendly and quick in taking our order and serving the food. We never had to wait an unusually long time for our food – not even in the evening when the restaurant was already quite full – and our special requests were also accommodated.
So if you're in the mood for South Indian food, I definitely recommend a visit to Kerala. Making a reservation by phone in the evening is advisable. It's easier to reach by car than by public transport, but you might have to search for parking. Card payments are accepted at Kerala. I'm sure you won't regret it.
