Surbahar is an Indian restaurant in Haidhausen, located between Prinzregentenplatz and Max-Weber-Platz. First off: Surbahar recently changed its name to Delhi Palace. When it was still Surbahar, my companion and I loved eating there and enjoying the excellent, authentic Indian cuisine. We haven't tried Delhi Palace yet. Since Surbahar is essentially gone, only the location remains, I won't go into too much detail in this post.
Surbahar is located on a long, straight street and, perhaps due to its less-than-ideal location, was completely empty on every visit. We usually went there on weekday evenings after work, but also once or twice on weekends for lunch or Sunday evenings. On only one occasion were two other tables occupied out of approximately 15.
The service at Surbahar is very friendly and greets you warmly as soon as you enter, but it's a bit slow. Once, there were four of us at Surbahar, and we ordered two appetizers and four main courses. There were four other people at a table next to us; otherwise, the restaurant was empty. We waited about 35 minutes for our food, which was definitely too long. How long would the wait be if all the tables were occupied? However, once our food arrived, we were all very satisfied. The food was very fresh, delicious, and the portions were generous.
As with most of our visits to Surbahar, we chose the vegetarian thali with saffron rice and naan bread, along with palak paneer and mutter paneer. Everything was delicious, and upon request, the spice was omitted, or the thali can be customized. An acquaintance ordered the chicken tikka masala – a curry dish made with grilled and marinated chicken pieces in a spicy tomato sauce – also very tasty and generally a very popular dish in India and at Indian restaurants.
As I have already mentioned in my other posts about Indian restaurants (e.g. Samrat, Sangeet, GaneshaPalak Paneer is a dish with Indian cheese and spinach – one of my favorites. At Surbahar, the Palak Paneer is excellent, very fresh, and there's plenty of paneer (Indian cheese) in the dish – not crumbled too finely, as I like to have some larger pieces to bite into. The naan bread is delicious and served fresh from the oven and warm. There's plenty of saffron rice, and they'll bring more if you ask.
The ambience of Surbahar is typically Indian: yellow walls, wooden furniture, white tablecloths with candles on the tables, Indian figures and plants on the windowsills, pictures on the walls and Indian – terrible – music in the background.
Overall, the Surbahar was very cozy, but as mentioned above, it no longer exists in that form. Card payments were accepted at the Surbahar.
I haven't eaten at the Delhi Palace yet – but I will try it and let you know.
