Espresso capsules from Jacobs – For a long time, I personally didn't need a coffee or espresso to start my day. However, I recently became increasingly interested in this rather complex topic. Now, an espresso right after waking up and a second one after every meal are firmly established in my daily routine. Many Germans feel the same way. To be precise, over 63,000 tons of espresso were sold in German retail stores in 2014 alone. Some prefer to drink it straight, while others use espresso as the base for a range of coffee specialties, such as a latte macchiato or cappuccino. Now there's an interesting new product on the market: Jacobs' five new varieties of espresso capsules – made entirely of aluminum, resulting in an even more intense coffee aroma for the drinker.
Espresso capsules from Jacobs – The different varieties
Jacobs has launched five different espresso capsule varieties. To ensure there's a perfect flavor for every coffee or espresso lover, there's a capsule for everyone, ranging from aromatic and mild to intensely strong. The Jacobs espresso capsules are called "Lungo 6 Classico," "Lungo 8 Intenso," "Espresso 7 Classico," "Espresso 10 Intenso," and "Ristretto 12," and you can buy them—depending on the variety—in sets of 10 for tasting or 20. So, I took a closer look at the varieties. They're very easy to use, as they're designed for Nespresso machines (Check compatibility) are. 100% made of aluminum: The perfect aroma and the right pressure
The first espresso I tested was the "Lungo 6 Classico." As the name suggests, with its mild, fresh spiciness, it offers a very classic espresso flavor with a thick and finely textured crema – ideal for anyone who prefers a mild espresso. The second variety, the "Lungo 8 Intenso," was my personal favorite during the tasting. This blend is characterized by an extensive roasting of high-quality Arabica and Robusta beans, resulting in an intensely robust flavor. If you like it a bit stronger, but not too strong, I think you'll particularly enjoy this variety. The "Espresso 7 Classico" is different – characterized by a balanced blend of Arabica and intense Robusta with a pleasant fruity sweetness. Compared to the "Espresso 10 Intenso," I personally prefer the "Espresso 7 Classico." The 10 Intenso variant is powerful, spicy, and very intense in flavor. The espresso is intentionally very strong, a result of combining Robusta with sweet and fruity Arabica. This creates an intense and long-lasting finish. "Espresso 12 Ristretto" is characterized by its intense and vibrant flavor. This blend skillfully combines Robusta and complex Arabica aromas, resulting in a distinctly multifaceted and powerful taste.

What makes Jacobs espresso capsules special?
Perhaps the most distinctive feature is the aluminum packaging (compliant with 100%), which allows used capsules to be disposed of in the yellow recycling bin/bag without hesitation. The airtight seal of the capsules further ensures optimal preservation of the coffee aromas and perfect pressure on the espresso inside – nothing stands in the way of a perfect brew. All varieties of the new Jacobs espresso capsules are also UTZ certified (100%) – meaning they are audited according to economic, social, and environmental standards – and are therefore cultivated and harvested in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner. The beans come from the region known as the "Coffee Belt" – comprising over 70 countries – around the equator, which is renowned for its ideal climatic conditions for coffee cultivation. The Coffee Belt lies between 23 degrees north latitude and 25 degrees south latitude. The climate there is neither too extreme nor too little or too much rainfall – ideal for the white blossoms to grow and thrive on small coffee bushes. After just two days, the blossoms fade and the cherries develop into coffee cherries. Six to eleven months later, the coffee cherries, each containing two coffee beans, are fully ripe and ready for manual harvesting.

For the espresso capsules, the green coffee beans are roasted between 180°C and 250°C until they reach a golden-beige color. The roast level of the coffee bean significantly influences the aroma, color, and taste of each coffee. The roasting process for the espresso capsules varies depending on the bean's origin, the desired aroma profile, and the coffee intensity described above. Experienced coffee roasters within the Jacobs team ensure consistent quality across all coffee varieties and blends. The result is the new range of five espresso capsules.

Personal opinion
As described above, I prefer the milder varieties. I particularly appreciate that they've considered every espresso drinker, offering a total of five different intensity levels. The practical packaging in flat boxes of 10 makes the capsules easy to store and also allows them to be sorted into existing capsule storage racks. The price is €2.49 per 10-pack, which works out to 25 cents per cup or espresso, and for me, considering I only drink a maximum of two espressos a day, that's perfectly reasonable. Amazon also offers the boxes in a 5-pack, but at €12.45, there's no price advantage. It's also convenient that the capsules are color-coded, meaning that even when stored together, you can immediately identify which variety you have. Their availability at various online retailers, supermarkets, and discount stores makes them easy to find. In terms of taste, I am personally most impressed by the Lungo varieties of Jacobs espresso capsules, and so they have become a permanent part of my private collection of different espresso capsules – also because I like to try new things all the time.
