B.GOOD has been available in Munich since the end of June.

Grand Opening: B.GOOD Munich – Bowls, Burgers & Salads – Although Munich has many restaurants, from a culinary perspective, few things excite me as much as new openings. On average, three restaurants or "foodie spots" open and close in Munich every day. So there's always something new happening, and the city's food and drink scene is constantly evolving. Since June 28, 2018, Munich has a new gem in the fresh food scene: B.GOOD in Haidhausen. They serve bowls, salads, burgers, as well as milkshakes and smoothies. A new opening that has made me both curious and hungry.

The story of B.GOOD

B.GOOD Munich is the second branch in Germany. Following its opening in Nuremberg, the B.GOOD restaurant chain, originally from the USA, has now established itself in Munich. B.GOOD's hallmarks are freshness, naturalness, and regionality. Its origins lie in its founding year of 2004. Anthony Ackil and Jon Olinto, two Bostonians, founded the company that year, drawing inspiration from the cherished and beloved cooking of their uncle Faris, who always invited his nephews and friends to his home for a good meal. Their desire was, and remains to this day, to revive food that is homemade and simply delicious, fresh, and natural. B.GOOD describes its philosophy and approach with the phrase "Food with Roots." The idea is that B.GOOD food unites all those who produce, prepare, and enjoy the ingredients for B.GOOD's dishes – in other words, us, the B.GOOD guests. What I appreciate is that B.GOOD places just as much value on ethics and sustainability as on taste and a balanced price-performance ratio. Growing and expanding without compromising quality or image, so to speak. In the B.GOOD kitchen, everything is fresh and therefore seasonal. All ingredients are homemade and prepared "à la minute" in the private kitchen. Of course, there's nothing to hide at B.GOOD, and so during the soft opening, I was allowed a peek into the kitchen and could ask anything I wanted. Today, B.GOOD can be found at over 70 different locations – and counting.

Everything is freshly prepared after ordering.

What can you expect at B.GOOD Munich?

The restaurant itself impresses from the moment you step inside with its cozy and warm atmosphere. Simple wooden furniture in natural tones graces the left-hand and visually separated rear section; brick walls and stainless steel accents adorn the walls and individual areas. The order counter is located right at the entrance, with the menu displayed on screens. For those who prefer a printed menu, it's also available in A5 format. Alongside colorful murals and chalkboards, the walls feature short stories about B.GOOD's history and philosophy. A subtle color palette, combined with pleasant lighting and friendly service, immediately made me want to linger. Orders are placed directly at the counter. The pager system makes it easy for both staff and guests. Similar to other well-known restaurant chains, a pager is given to each customer after ordering and taken to their chosen table (for two, four, or even larger groups – a total of 54 seats inside and 20 outside). When the pager vibrates, the food is ready and can be picked up at the small station next to the cash register. Now let's see what I want.

Menu and drinks

A first glance at the menu immediately reveals that B.GOOD has dedicated considerable time to exploring how to achieve a balanced and healthy diet while still enjoying delicious food. That's why the menu features a mix of greens, various grains, nuts, legumes, and proteins – food that truly satisfies. The colorful and diverse dishes and bowls are further enhanced by additional culinary influences from around the world. The menu is divided into "Green & Grain Bowls" (bowls from €7.90), "Salads" (from €6.90), "Build your Burger" (four different combinations from €6.50 including meat and bread selection plus toppings from €1), "Side Dishes" (six different options), "Kids" (consisting only of a children's burger), "Desserts", "Smoothies" (from €4.50 | "Three Greens", "Kale Crush" and "Açai Berry"), "Milkshakes" (for €4.50 | varieties: strawberry, banana, vanilla), "Soft Drinks" (from €2.20), "Coffee & Tea" (cappuccino €2.50 / espresso €1.50) and "Beer/Wine/Secco" (cool!: Franconian wine).

The menu is available to browse and select in advance. here. Here, you also have plenty of time to decide on-site. Worth mentioning: By using seasonal recipes, the freshest ingredients are guaranteed – sourced regionally whenever possible. So everything really tastes like it was "made by good friends." A positive side effect of cooking seasonally is supporting nature's natural crop rotation – an important component of sustainable agriculture and gastronomy. Also important: B.GOOD works exclusively with producers and suppliers who share the company's standards and values. This ensures that only the best ends up on your plate. Food is left in its natural state, and you can taste it from the very first forkful or bite.

The selection of my companion and myself.

My personal opinion

Since I had the opportunity to preview B.GOOD Munich two days before its official opening, it was clear, and had been announced beforehand, that there were still a few things that needed improvement. After all, the approximately 35 invited guests that day were the first visitors to the Munich location. I particularly appreciate that everything you need to know is explained when ordering at the counter. So, if an ingredient is unfamiliar, or if you'd like to substitute or remove it from your order, your wishes are readily accommodated. The flexible topping options allow you to customize every burger, salad, and bowl. I was pleased that everything is prepared fresh to order. This meant it took longer than expected for my pager to vibrate, but that might have been due to it being the first day. However, once the bowls, burgers, sweet potato fries, and other items are in front of you, they taste absolutely delicious. The creations are varied and also offer vegan and vegetarian options. It's also nice that B.GOOD doesn't overwhelm you with too many options. Four salads, four bowls, six sides, three smoothies and milkshakes, a few desserts, and the option to build your own burger. That's it. I like that B.GOOD has a relaxed atmosphere, no stuffy vibe, and that even the prices reflect their commitment to being "good.".

Satisfied with my B.GOOD salad

I ordered the "Three Greens" smoothie (€4.50) with almond milk, baby spinach, hemp seeds, mint, pineapple, lime, and honey, as well as a sugar-free Eizbach Cola (€2.90) to quench my thirst. Next came the "Roasted Butternut" salad (€7.90) with baby spinach, butternut squash, Bavarian cheddar, apple, cranberries, almonds, and a maple-mustard vinaigrette. It was nice that the seeds gave the salad a bit of crunch, and they weren't stingy with the toppings. The vinaigrette was great. Adding an organic fried egg (+€1.50) and extra chicken (+€3.50) brought the total price of the salad to €11.90, which was justified by the feeling of fullness I finally got. After a while, the really good and crispy sweet potato fries, generously salted (for €3.50), arrived in the middle of the table. My companion chose the well-portioned "Spicy Avocado & Lime" bowl (for €8.90) with fresh kale, avocado, carrots, black and green beans, zucchini, corn, feta, cherry tomatoes, chipotle sauce, lime, cilantro, and red pepper vinaigrette. "Quite spicy, but good and fresh," was the feedback from my companion, who couldn't finish the bowl and took advantage of the takeaway offer.

I would definitely come back, also to try the burgers and other bowls and salads. There are plenty of burger joints in Munich, and bowls are becoming increasingly common, but with B.GOOD, Haidhausen has finally gained a real "meeting place" for bowl and burger fans. In my opinion, B.GOOD isn't a place you just pop into to grab a quick bite, but rather a place to meet up, take your time, enjoy good food, and relax at the same time. The menu and the price are also just right. I like it all!

Also great! Sweet potato fries as a side dish or snack.

Hard facts

With Munich and its managing director Christian Langer, B.GOOD is now launching its expansion into Germany after its initial opening in Nuremberg. Branches in Ingolstadt and Rosenheim are also planned. At the same time, B.GOOD aims to become increasingly successful and support the community. To this end, B.GOOD supports charities and aid projects. Every B.GOOD restaurant worldwide has a local community partner (in Munich, it's the Munich Food Bank), which is supported in cooperation with B.GOOD. – Cool, right? By the way, if you're currently traveling or will be soon, be sure to check out B.GOOD in the USA, Canada, Switzerland, or Nuremberg. They have locations there too. But first, let's head to Haidhausen.
