Café Haidi, or simply "Das Haidi" as it's also known, is a rather small, unassuming café on Pariser Straße – not far from Munich's Ostbahnhof (East Station) at Weißenburger Platz. I first became aware of this little café through a magazine I recently bought, which reviewed over 800 establishments, including bars, cafés, and restaurants. Despite the rather unexciting description, my companion and I decided to give Café Haidi a try.
We went in, but turned right around at the entrance because when I asked if they accepted card payments, the answer was no, and I had to get some cash. After successfully finding some money, we went back into the café. Although Haidi is quite small and intimate (about seven tables), I felt like I could sit there undisturbed and chat in peace. The green wallpaper, tiles, and stickers on the walls in various patterns and designs make Haidi very cozy. It's partly like a 1950s café with brown wooden tables, simple chairs, and a dark bar area, but also hip and trendy like a small, hip bar. The kitchen area, or rather the counter, faces directly onto the dining area. This is also where the various cakes offered at Haidi are displayed.
In addition to our regular meal (which was a breakfast burger from the menu with rosemary flatbread, organic scrambled eggs, fried bacon, pickle, tomato, cheese, arugula, and homemade mustard cream cheese for €5.50, plus a fruit muesli with natural yogurt), we also ordered a Russian crumb cake, a poppy seed cupcake with raspberry cream, and a vanilla almond cake. (Very rich, but so delicious!). To drink, we had a Spezi (a German soft drink), a chai tea (very tasty – also available with a flavored liqueur), a fruit spritzer, and a still water.
The menu offers a surprisingly extensive selection for a café of this size. Breakfast is offered using a "build-your-own" system. This means that guests can select their desired breakfast items by checking off small slips of paper distributed to them (see photos). There's also a weekly changing menu (example in photos) with various additional dishes ranging from €4.90 to a maximum of €9.90. On Saturdays and Sundays, two Weisswurst sausages with a pretzel are available for just €4.50. A wide variety of drinks, long drinks, and autumnal specials are always on offer. In addition, cocktails, beers, and red and white wines are always available – a truly comprehensive selection for such a small café.
From 6 pm onwards, the evening menu and a selection of tapas become available. The evening menu includes various dishes, from homemade Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) for €5.30, to vegetarian Gröstl (a potato and meat dish) with a small salad (€9.90 + €3.90), and rump steak with rosemary potatoes for €13.90. Those who prefer tapas can also order the tapas platter for €10.90 – or €18.90 for two people.
The staff, mostly young women, are exceptionally friendly. You're greeted, served, and seen off with a smile. The prices, for both drinks and food, are absolutely reasonable. As mentioned, we had a few drinks, two cakes, a cappuccino, a breakfast burger, and muesli with fruit – all for €33 including tip. The food took a little longer, but still within a reasonable timeframe. There's also Wi-Fi, but it's not readily available without asking. I would definitely go back to Café Haidi, especially since it's relatively centrally located. We hadn't made a reservation and still got a table. Why not give it a try? Just bring cash. There's a bank within walking distance – only a 4-minute walk if you don't get lost ;-).
