Mangostin – Asian cuisine at the airport – The Asian restaurant Mangostin is probably familiar to most of you. However, very few people know that there are two different Mangostin locations in Munich (the Mangostin on Maria-Einsiedel-Straße and the Mangostin Airport at Terminalstraße 2). I recently visited the Mangostin Airport as part of "Bianca's Tasty Tour," checking out the ambiance, value for money, and service, and of course, sampling the food.

Ambiance and offerings at Mangostin Airport
The Mangostin Airport restaurant has been open since 2003 and offers a wide variety of Asian dishes, including numerous stir-fries, various Asian salads, soups and starters, curries, noodle dishes, and several types of sushi. Anyone who enjoys Asian cuisine should visit Mangostin Airport at least once. Why go to Munich Airport instead of the city center? Firstly, because the Mangostin at the airport is surprisingly cheaper than the Mangostin in Munich's city center, secondly, because the menu is different, and thirdly, because – in my opinion – the atmosphere is just as cozy. While Mangostin Airport may not have a terrace, it still impresses with its appealing ambiance and plenty of seating on light-colored wooden furniture amidst Asian decorative elements, bamboo tubes, and greenery.

During my visit, my companion and I settled into the small, cozy hut at the back, opposite the Sushi Box at Mangostin Airport. Luckily, the manager, Jürgen Halwachs, was also there and took a few minutes to answer all my questions. I learned, for example, that Mangostin Airport offers its delicious sushi in to-go boxes with a 10% to-go discount, and that everything is freshly prepared on-site. So you definitely won't be served fish or sushi that's been sitting in its box for hours waiting for a hungry sushi fan. Another unique aspect is that Mangostin Airport is part of the adjacent Bagutta restaurant (for pizza and pasta – I'll tell you more about that later...). This means you can sit at Mangostin Airport and order pizza from Bagutta, or you can enjoy fresh Asian cuisine prepared and cooked at Mangostin Airport, served at Bagutta. So, for example, if you arrive at the airport with your children and would like to try the Mangostin, but your little ones much prefer the smell of the salami pizza, you can simply order from Mangostin.
The sushi
Selection and evaluation of the dishes
Now, let's talk about our food choices. For drinks, we both opted for something thirst-quenching and simple. I had a rhubarb spritzer (0.4l/€4.70 – available in various flavors), and my companion had a Kombucha Carpe Diem Quince (three varieties: cranberry, quince, classic | 0.25l/€4.50). Mangostin Airport also offers a wide selection of wines, beers, other soft drinks, and Mangostin cocktails (Happy Hour daily from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a discount code of 50%). It was still a bit too early for hard liquor, so we opted for appetizers instead of alcohol. After browsing the menu for a while, we chose "Poh Piard Thord" – six crispy baked spring rolls with plum and chili dip (€10.50). The rolls – take a look at the photos – aren't as small as in many other Asian restaurants; they're almost filling enough for a light snack. However, since neither my companion nor I were particularly hungry, we asked the friendly waitress for a recommendation for our main course. I was in the mood for sushi and, as recommended, ordered the Sushi Classic Set "Sumida." This includes four pieces of premium sushi: maguro, ebi prawn, hokkigai clam, and salmon. It also comes with a California roll containing real Arctic crab, avocado, and tobiko gold flying fish caviar (for €21.50). My companion, on the other hand, opted for a curry: "Massaman Nua" – a mild Thai curry with beef, tamarind, diced potatoes, roasted shallots, and lotus seeds (for €20.50).

Our dishes arrived quickly after our empty appetizer plates were cleared. They were served simultaneously and attractively presented. My sushi didn't get cold, so we started with the curry. A generous portion with plenty of rice – not always a given – was served in two separate pots, separated by a paper-thin piece of bread – similar to Indian papadams. The curry had a pleasant level of spiciness, even for me. If you don't like spicy food, you should probably choose something else. With the wide variety on offer, that shouldn't be a problem. The beef was also tender, not at all tough, and well-portioned. My sushi looked wonderful and tasted just as good. There was nothing to complain about, except that I left half of the Hokkigai mussel. The friendly waitress smiled when she saw this, explaining that most Europeans do the same, as the taste – rather dry and unfamiliar – seems to be too unfamiliar for most palates. (The photo shows the nigiri wrapped with a strip of black seaweed.) I can recommend both the sushi selection and the curry. But be sure to check out the entire menu, as the variety of sushi, individual nigiri, maki, and other dishes is remarkable. I'll definitely be back soon to try more. My companion would have preferred more filling in the rolls, but I thought they were perfect as they were – certainly a matter of opinion.

Brunch and lunch menu
Even on Sundays, the kitchen here is always bustling. Quite the opposite, in fact. They offer a lavish brunch every Sunday from 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM (45 times a year, excluding the summer holidays). For €39 per person, you can enjoy a variety of Asian delicacies, including different types of sushi, oysters, six different appetizer salads, various main courses, and sweet treats. During the week, from Monday to Friday, from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM, they offer five different noodle dishes in various combinations for €9.80, including a 2-liter soft drink. Fair price, right? The gentlemen at the next table were taking advantage of this offer while I was testing it, and I asked them if they liked it and if they came often. They did both.

Mangostin Airport offers seating for approximately 208 people at around 60-70 tables. It can also be rented in sections for various celebrations. For example, there's the "Bamboo Gallery," a relatively secluded and quiet area that accommodates 70 people, making it ideal for medium-sized events and parties. If you're planning an event at Mangostin, feel free to contact the staff, and they'll work with you to find the best solution. The restaurant is open daily from 10:30 am to 10:00 pm, and payment is accepted by card. Gift certificates are also available for true Asian food enthusiasts. At lunchtime, you can usually just drop in with up to 10 people without a reservation. However, reservations are highly recommended for weekends and brunch; otherwise, you might have to choose another restaurant at Munich Airport.
