The Menterschwaige restaurant in Harlaching is divided into a spacious restaurant area and an equally large, partially shaded beer garden, situated directly on the banks of the Isar River, a beloved feature for all Munich residents. A major advantage is that you can relax by the Isar afterward with a full stomach. Another is that you can decide on the spot whether you prefer the service in the restaurant at a nicely set table or the typical beer garden atmosphere. A clear disadvantage: the prices. While perhaps reasonable in the restaurant, considering its location directly on the Isar in the popular Harlaching district, the prices in the beer garden are definitely excessive.
I tried both the restaurant and the beer garden and, overall, I have to say I would come back for the restaurant, but I would choose a different beer garden next time, as I didn't feel entirely comfortable. The Hugo from the small bottle tasted like rubbing alcohol (my companion agreed), and everything we ordered in the beer garden was far too expensive. We paid a whopping €38 for our salad from a jar, a rather dry giant pretzel with Obatzda (Bavarian cheese spread), a small bottle of Hugo, and a sausage with potato salad and Adelholzener fruit juice spritzer! Almost €40 for a pretzel with Obatzda, salad, and a sausage, plus a few sips of undrinkable Hugo and a fruit juice spritzer worth €1.50?! Sorry, but you can overdo it, regardless of the location or status of the beer garden. While the salad was indeed plentiful and very tasty, and the Obatzda was okay, the pretzel was too hard and far too crispy for my liking, and my drink was undrinkable. I only drank the Hugo because of its price. My companion's dish was okay, albeit too expensive.
Well, we still enjoyed our stay, although I personally didn't feel entirely comfortable. I can't quite put my finger on why. Perhaps it was because the beer garden was very large and many benches were empty – despite the bright sunshine – and somehow the right atmosphere was missing, and I just didn't find it very "beer-like." The many shady spots, noisy children, and the far too expensive food combined were enough to spoil the overall impression.
When we dined at the restaurant, we opted for a shandy (0.5l/€4.50) and a Hugo for a hefty €7. Both drinks were delicious, and the Hugo was served immediately with a straw. For a starter, we shared a goat cheese salad with two small goat cheese medallions, raspberries, and raspberry dressing (for a steep €14). The salad was very tasty, and I would order it again in a heartbeat. The portion size could have been a bit larger, though. For our main courses, my companion chose ribbon pasta with chanterelles (€16), and I ordered the golden trout on lemon mashed potatoes with vegetables (€22) – a dream! Admittedly expensive, but absolutely delicious. The fish was incredibly tender, the mashed potatoes had a wonderful lemon flavor, and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. For the appetizer, two alcoholic drinks, and two exceptionally delicious main courses – a feast for both the stomach and the eyes – we paid €67.50 including tip. The service in the restaurant was exceptionally friendly and courteous. They were always attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed. We only had to find a spoon for my companion's pasta, but even then, the next waiter immediately came to my aid and brought one upon request. The restaurant's ambiance is wonderful. You can get a good impression from the photos. It's very cozy and Bavarian, with high dormer ceilings, light-colored tablecloths, lots of wood, flowers, and soft lighting. During our visit, we sat on the restaurant's spacious terrace, overlooking the adjacent beer garden in front and the Isar River to the left.
Overall, I can definitely recommend a visit to Menterschwaige. As mentioned, the beer garden experience was rather disappointing and far too expensive. You can have more fun in Munich beer gardens for the same (or less) money. Here's my favorite again... Michaelbiergarten It's worth mentioning. I know almost every beer garden, but this one is hard to beat.
The restaurant "Menterschwaige" impresses overall with its very fine food, exceptionally good and friendly service, and great atmosphere. So if you're looking for Bavarian cuisine, this is definitely the place to go.
