Skiwater | Raspberry juice since 1922 – Exercise makes you thirsty, summer does too, and being outdoors even more so. And that thirst needs to be quenched – somehow, and preferably with something good and refreshing. That's why I want to introduce you to a product today that I've been really enjoying since the initial "getting to know it" phase a few days ago, and which I recently reviewed in a short clip As I announced, I'm talking about Skiwater, the delicious raspberry-flavored drink whose recipe has remained unchanged since 1922. If you're thinking, "Hmm. Not for me. I don't ski," stop! Neither do I, and that's only a minor point. While this tasty raspberry juice was originally created for the skiing community, and remains THE drink for all winter sports enthusiasts, its sparkling, fresh taste is gaining more and more fans in summer too – in beer gardens, at mountain huts, while hiking, and at an increasing number of hotspots outside the alpine mountains.
To get to know the product better and understand its origins, I met with the initiators of Skiwasser, bottled in practical 0.33l glass bottles – Jitse Rupp and Markus Lüthge – tasted it, and asked them what makes it so special. Naturally, it made sense to choose a location that is one of the numerous other contact points Skiwater was on the drinks menu. So, along with my Skiwater, my incredibly delicious spare ribs, and the guys, I ended up at the already familiar Gutshof Menterschwaige on the Isar River. But let's start from the beginning.
Menterschwaige Manor: Spare Ribs and Skiwater
Haven't heard of Menterschwaige yet? Well, listen up! The Menterschwaige estate is a well-known restaurant and beer garden located near the Isar River in Munich. The menu features specialties such as Böfflamott – a 40-hour braised beef shoulder with creamy kohlrabi and potato dumplings (€21) – or Wiener Schnitzel (veal) with fried potatoes, a small salad, and cold cranberry sauce (€25). Exquisite cuisine, Bavarian delicacies, and hearty snacks also await you. Whether in the restaurant's inviting dining room, on the covered terrace, or in the quiet courtyard at the rear, you can relax, dine, and celebrate (weddings, birthdays, corporate events, and more). The beer garden, with its spacious layout offering both sunny and shady spots, is a particularly popular place to be. And that's exactly where we settled in. Before taking a seat, however, I made a quick stop at the grill station. Behind the grill and smoker, the trained Pierino Digitalino has been in charge for four years. (Is that the correct name?) and conjures up what are probably the best spare ribs in town. Because I a) wanted to test this claim and b) was naturally interested in how they're made so delicious, I asked around.
The spare ribs from the Menterschwaige
The spare ribs at Gutshof Menterschwaige are cooked for 12 hours in their wood-fired smoker at a maximum pressure of 70 bar. This time gives the meat its typical – ideally – slightly smoky flavor and an incomparable intensity when eaten. After smoking, they are briefly grilled for the guests at Menterschwaige, seared to perfection, and served with potato salad. What can I say? Delicious, delicious, delicious, and truly something special. So, if you get the spare ribs, please don't forget to grab a bottle of ice-cold Skiwater from the basket near the checkout. Which brings us back to the heart of the matter and the refreshing Skiwater.
Skiwasser in detail & what makes it special
Skiwater, besides being the first isotonic thirst quencher, is a gently raspberry-flavored drink with light carbonation. Personally, I only order still mineral water, as I (and my stomach) can't tolerate carbonation. So, when I saw "carbon dioxide" listed among the ingredients before opening the bottle, I was admittedly a little skeptical at first, but after the first sip, I was all the more delighted by the delicious, lightly sparkling raspberry juice. Skiwater is neither too sweet nor too bland in flavor, and manages to create an incredibly refreshing and thirst-quenching effect.
But what makes Skiwasser so special? Perhaps it's the basic recipe, unchanged since its origin in 1922, which is still used today, or perhaps it's the fact that the raspberry juice, with all its ingredients and components, is completely organic? For Skiwasser, cool glacier water is blended with raspberry juice and a few refreshing splashes of lemon and lime extract (to accentuate the raspberry's fruit acidity), lightly sweetened exclusively with fructose, and that's it. The raspberries, sourced exclusively from freshly harvested organic farms, are gently pressed and processed immediately after picking. As mentioned, the spring water used for Skiwasser, which is only mildly carbonated, is located at approximately 1,100 meters above sea level in the Alps.
My rating
I personally love Skiwater because it's so good – without being too heavy or sticky in the stomach – that it fits perfectly into a great moment with friends outdoors in a beer garden, enjoying relaxed conversation. It's also ideal as a sporty drink. For example, in my case, it was perfect combined with a wonderful visit to the beer garden at Gutshof Menterschwaige on the Isar River. A relaxed atmosphere, easy conversation, thirst, hunger, a snack, Skiwater – perfect. So, my leisure tip for you would definitely be a visit to Menterschwaige with a large portion of spare ribs and at least one chilled bottle of Skiwater. Delicious, as my cover photo should show.
Hard facts and sources
Have you also developed a desire to try Skiwater? Then head to Menterschwaige or Kochhaus (Schwabing | Hohenzollernstraße 74, Gärtnerplatz | Gärtnerplatz 5, Haidhausen | Weißenburger Straße 26), to Käfer delicatessen's flagship store (Prinzregentenstraße 73) or to the Pachmayr shop (Theresienstraße 33). Bottles are available from €1.69.
Here are some key facts: This low-sugar, high-quality organic beverage contains 4.7g of carbohydrates per 100ml of raspberry juice (compared to the average of 6-8g for fruit spritzers) and is originally an Alpine classic. The Skiwater team has succeeded in launching a product that evokes childhood memories while simultaneously being modern, high-quality, and appealing to a younger audience. What might have been enjoyed in a ski lodge just a few months ago can be savored with friends on a balmy summer evening in a beer garden or sipped under parasols at the beach. Skiwater is available in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. It contains only Alpine spring water, organic raspberry juice, organic fructose syrup, carbon dioxide, and lime and lemon extract. With a nutritional value of 19kcal or 82.4 kJ per 100 ml, it's a delicious and perfectly "permitted refreshment" for fun, sports, leisure, and more. Cheers!
I will come/buy again: Yes.
