Sound and fury | Schwabing Schall und Rauch in Munich is a place you have to know if you're from Munich – and especially if you spend a lot of time in Schwabing or Maxvorstadt. My companion and I recently went there spontaneously on a Saturday for lunch/breakfast because we were hungry and didn't have a specific destination in mind. We ended up in the cozy restaurant/bar on Schellingstrasse without a reservation, looked at the menu, and decided to stay. When we entered, only a few of the approximately 12 tables were occupied – namely, four long, high bar tables in the back of the restaurant and seven tables for two. The bar's ambiance is simple but cozy. Dark parquet flooring mixed with tiles, a long, dark wooden bar, simple wooden furniture, and colorful walls contribute to an overall very basic, yet comfortable atmosphere.
Once we were seated, the friendly waitress, who was solely responsible for the entire restaurant during our visit, came directly to our table and presented us with the menus. The menu is very extensive, offering a wide range of food and drinks. For example, you can expect various pasta dishes, winter specialties, delicious Indian wraps, a variety of breakfasts and breakfast extras, and much more. Equally noteworthy is the extensive selection of cocktails, long drinks, and especially gins. Despite its name, Schall und Rauch (which might not be immediately apparent) features 20 rare gins available for tasting.
Before ordering our food, we decided on drinks: a Diet Coke (they didn't have Coke Zero) (€2.50), a rooibos vanilla tea (€2.20), and a cappuccino (€3.90). These were served promptly and at the same time. For our food, we chose scrambled eggs for an unbeatable €3.90; tagliatelle with diced tomatoes, oyster mushrooms, and mozzarella for a very reasonable €6.20; and one of the Indian wraps, called "Chicken Tikka Roll," with marinated chicken breast, Marsala, and mint sauce (€7.90). The portions at Schall und Rauch are very large. I just barely managed to finish my portion of pasta. In my opinion, it was far too oily, and the more I ate, the more uncomfortable I felt. Although I have a hearty stomach – as we say in Bavaria – I definitely have a problem with overly oily foods. This also dampened my enjoyment of the otherwise quite tasty Schall und Rauch pasta. Furthermore, my main course, the Indian wrap ordered by my companion, and the scrambled eggs didn't arrive at the same time. There was a gap of at least 10-15 minutes between servings, which is too long in my opinion – especially when the restaurant wasn't even a quarter full. Even for me, who usually chats constantly while eating 😉, I was almost finished by the time my companion received her dish – less than ideal, in my opinion. The wrap portion is also huge and difficult to finish if you're not very hungry, or rather, not very hungry at all. The wrap itself was excellent, the meat tender, and the filling ample. The scrambled eggs were also delicious, and for under four euros, it was a really great breakfast.
In total, we ended up paying just €27 including tip. Card payments are also accepted at Schall und Rauch. For such a central location, that's incredibly cheap. Schwabing is a vibrant restaurant district, and higher prices are the norm. So, as far as prices go, it gets a definite thumbs up. Basically, there was nothing to complain about, apart from the oily pasta and the staggered service. The service was exceptionally friendly; we were asked if everything was alright – not too often, but not at all – and were served politely. The clientele here is rather young, "student-like," relaxed, and easygoing. It's not a place for formal dining. Some might even describe Schall und Rauch as a cozy pub. The atmosphere is definitely more casual.
If you're looking for a cozy spot to chat and enjoy a meal at a fair price, Schall und Rauch is definitely the place for you. My companion told me during our visit that the restaurant/bar is apparently quite well-known and popular in the student, party, and "young people" scene. It's a great place to celebrate, drink, eat well and affordably, and just hang out. So, if you like a relaxed, casual, yet pleasant atmosphere, this is the place for you. If you happen to be in Munich's Maxvorstadt or Schwabing districts, feel free to check out Schall und Rauch. It's open daily from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM, and even until 3:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. And if things get a little lively – no problem! Schall und Rauch is also easily accessible by public transport via the U2 subway line (Josephsplatz station) and city bus number 153 (Türkenstraße station). Have fun!
