Biancas Tasty Tour Flughafen MuenchenSchuhbeck's Munich Airport As a true Munich native and Bavarian, my heart naturally skipped a beat when I tried this restaurant. As a fan of Bavarian delicacies and exquisite cuisine, it's practically impossible to avoid Alfons Schuhbeck and his gourmet cooking in Munich. Munich Airport, the gateway to the city and the world, has offered the opportunity to sample Schuhbeck's culinary delights since April 2016 – the year the new satellite terminal opened – in the restaurant located in Terminal 2, Gate K, complete with a shop, takeaway area, and a cozy full-service dining room. The only downside: those not arriving (or departing) can't access it, as it's located beyond security. However, with more and more planes departing from the new departure area, you should soon have the chance to try Schuhbeck's.

Schuhbecks at Munich Airport

What can you expect at Schuhbeck's Munich Airport?

Of course, Bavarian cuisine is on offer. What Schuhbecks at Munich Airport does exceptionally well, in my opinion, is capture the Bavarian way of life. In other words, once you're seated, you completely forget you're at the airport and not, say, in the heart of the city center. This is achieved through a cozy atmosphere, an appealing ambiance with many details, and an overall coherent concept. Before we get to the restaurant itself, a quick mention of the adjoining Schuhbecks shop, located right next to the separate bakery with fresh bread and delicacies "to go." There, you can purchase spices from Alfons Schuhbeck and also buy a variety of his books. Many of the spices and spice gift sets available there are also used to enhance the Bavarian dishes on the menu.

Ambiance and food offerings

The restaurant itself has a cozy atmosphere, inviting you to linger. There are various seating options, including high tables, large group tables, tables for two, and even the option of sitting in the separate herb garden, charmingly decorated with fresh herbs in glass containers. In total, the restaurant can accommodate around 140 people at its 35 tables, each adorned with potted herbs. While the takeaway area directly adjacent to the restaurant offers smaller snacks such as meatloaf, filled baguettes, Schuhbeck's sandwiches, and Leberkäse (Bavarian meatloaf), the restaurant's menu features a variety of main courses from Bavarian cuisine. These are divided into appetizers, soups, sausages and cold cuts, main courses, pasta and vegetarian dishes, salads, and desserts. The menu isn't overly extensive, with two to four dishes to choose from in each category. Both classic dishes and more unusual creations are available. As mentioned, vegetarians are also catered for. All the dishes have one thing in common: they are created in Schuhbeck's style, meaning they are of the best quality, made from good ingredients and prepared and enriched with spices and special features.

Selection and evaluation of the dishes

My companion and I studied the menu. One thing was clear: we needed a starter. Not too heavy, since we still needed room for a Bavarian main course, but just a little something to whet our appetites. We opted for the "Smoked Salmon" (€12.50) with red apples (actually beetroot), crème fraîche, crisp arugula, and chili-vanilla salt. This was one of Schuhbeck's spice blends, for example. For our main courses, we chose the classic "Viennese Schnitzel (Viennese veal)" with potato and horseradish salad and cranberries (€21) and the "Bavarian Roast Pork" with dark beer sauce, potato dumplings, and bacon-braised cabbage (€14). When ordering, we were politely asked if we wanted to change anything about the side dishes, but we stuck with the classic combination. As far as prices are concerned, there's nothing to complain about; the schnitzel, at €21, is clearly in the Munich average to the upper third. The roast pork is perhaps €2-3 more expensive than average, but it also clearly stands out in terms of quality and taste. The appetizer, along with two small plates and a bread basket (the bread comes from the Heinze bakery) containing assorted small rolls, was served promptly, as was our bottle of still mineral water (…you have to save calories somewhere…).

The veal schnitzel

The appetizer was delicious. The salmon – you could tell from its color even before tasting it – was incredibly fresh and of top quality. Combined with the beetroot, the appetizer made for a perfect start to the meal. For those who just want a small bite, this is a healthy option. (Other starters would be, for example, "Cured Suckling Pig Ham" (€9) or a vegetarian "Vital Avocado Salad" (€9.50). Those wanting to warm up with soup can choose from "Bavarian Cream of Potato Soup" (€8) or "Fish Soup with Various Fine Fish" (€9.50). (Apparently, this is a real hit! It was too much for us as a starter, but I'll definitely come back for the soup, especially since it contains the spice "erotic curry" (no, not exotic, but erotic). Anyway. The starter was finished, we were satisfied, and shortly afterward, veal schnitzel and roast pork arrived. The portions were generous, no question. You can definitely leave full here. My meat—two separate pieces, as it should be—was divine. Super thin, perfectly golden-yellow breaded with a thin and delicious coating. Accompanied by a separate, equally large bowl of wonderful...) Potato salad. I liked that the horseradish was sprinkled on top, meaning the whole salad wasn't spicy. I devoured the cranberry sauce and all the meat. My companion's roast pork – I swiped a piece – was also fantastic. A great crackling, plenty of gravy, two large slices of meat, a picture-perfect dumpling with breadcrumbs inside and toasted breadcrumbs on top. There wasn't a single thing to complain about. I admit, I'm quite particular when it comes to Bavarian classics. You simply have certain expectations in mind, and they need to be met. You won't be disappointed at Schubecks. I promise. As I said – if you're not in the mood for something quite so traditional, you can order pasta (e.g., "Spaghetti with Shrimp" (€16.50) or "Tagliatelle Mediterranean" (€15)) or even "2 Vegetarian Spinach Dumplings" (€15). You're sure to find something you like, and for those with a sweet tooth... There are apple fritters (8€) or also „Sweet Heartiness“ (9€) – a chocolate ginger mousse in a glass.

Cozy, isn't it?

Breakfast offer and key facts

Those who are up really early have the option (between 7:00 am and 10:30 am) of trying Schuhbeck's breakfast package, which includes scrambled or fried eggs, bacon, fresh rolls, orange juice, butter and jam, as well as coffee or cappuccino (for €14.90). Of course, that wasn't possible during my visit, but who knows – maybe I'll fly out early one morning and then I'll stop by.

Schuhbecks is open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. You can usually order hot meals until 9:30 pm, but no one has to leave hungry, as they always offer a selection of delicious dishes until closing time. If you would like to make a reservation, you should do so via email (You can, of course, also enjoy the takeaway snacks from the entire area in the cozy restaurant, or you can even take the roast pork to the gate and eat it there. Apparently, that's a regular occurrence… 😉 Oh yes… Alfons Schuhbeck's books are also displayed throughout the restaurant, some recipes are written on the walls, and you can browse through them while you eat. But be sure to look up and admire the ceiling – I won't spoil it for you.

Personal conclusion

I'll definitely be back. One of the best schnitzels I've had in a long time. Great atmosphere and super friendly and attentive service. I highly recommend a visit.

Hello,
There is little to contradict the above description.
With one exception:
Stay away from Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad!
The latter (on 2 visits!) was each time a mashed mess that had little to do with potato salad.
Apart from that – two beer mat-sized schnitzels for 21(!) euros is borderline in terms of price…
Even friendly service can't compensate for the resulting frustration and the feeling (at least with this schnitzel) of having been ripped off…
