Smokey Joe's Currywurst at Munich Airport I admit, I'm not often tempted by a currywurst, and when I see "Curryking" in the refrigerated section, I can only shake my head. I've never actually tried it, but it just doesn't taste like a "really good currywurst" to me. It's a different story, though—as I now know after my 22nd test at Munich Airport—with Smokey Joe's currywurst. I'm sure we've all walked past this eye-catching food truck, designed in an airplane style, at least once, if not several times. But on today's test, I didn't just walk past it; I headed straight for this striking currywurst hotspot. So I joined the queue for a generous portion of Smokey Joe's currywurst. "The people of Munich can't do it!" is a common refrain from Berliners and Ruhr area residents, but prepare to be surprised...

„"Not all sausages are created equal!" We all know that. And currywurst is definitely not all the same. Finding a good one in Munich isn't exactly easy, but it's possible. A really good one, for example, is offered at the "Flieger-Foodtruck" (Aviator Food Truck) located in the MAC Forum at Munich Airport. There, the currywurst is prepared as "Smokey Joe's Currywurst red," as "Original Berlin Currywurst" in Berlin style (without casing), and as "Original Currywurst" from the Ruhr area (with casing). There are three different sauces to choose from, or rather, the base is a regional sauce made especially for Smokey Joe's, which is served in three different levels of spiciness. The "Classic" sauce is for those of you who don't really want it too spicy, the "Medium" version has a medium level of spiciness, and the "Hot" version is for the real tough guys.

Smokey Joe's currywurst with your choice of sauce costs a fair €4.50. The offered "Airport Fries XXL" (French fries) are optional, but can be ordered as part of a package with the sausage and sauce for €6.90. Alternatively, you can get the sausage with sauce and a "Flieger-Krustl" (a type of bread roll) for €5.50. Sides cost €1.20 for the Flieger-Krustl, €3.90 for the Airport Fries XXL, or €1.50 for a pretzel. (Oh, and by the way... a Flieger-Krustl is "simply" a baguette roll. Since many Americans don't recognize currywurst as such and mistakenly order a "hot dog," the currywurst with the Flieger-Krustl was added as a "charming response" to this. :-))

That was all Smokey Joe's on offer besides drinks. And that's all you need: sausage, fries, a drink, done. To quench your thirst, they offer Hofbräu seasonal beer on tap, Erdinger Urweisse, soft drinks and water (0.5l each), or Red Bull, coffee, tea or hot chocolate (0.25l each) for €2 to €3.90.

I've already mentioned that the extensively remodeled food truck is quite an eye-catcher. With its striking design and constantly updated to meet the latest technical and hygiene standards in the food truck scene, Smokey Joe's Currywurst truck has been serving delicious currywurst to Munich residents, tourists, and air travelers for 11 years. In front of the truck itself, where there's rarely a long queue, there are five high tables in a bright yellow design, complete with the Smokey Joe's logo, and 12 simple tables with seating, offering a total of about 40 seats and 20 standing places. So you can enjoy your sausage in the sun – but be warned: in summer, many others do the same, and then you'll only find standing room or have to find another sunny spot. The truck itself, with its silver exterior, is really cool. Originally built in 1954, and fitted with propellers and wings in American style, it was first put into operation for the 2006 World Cup.

Review of Smokey Joe's Currywurst

Smokey Joe's food truck, with its signature currywurst, has a reputation for being a serious competitor to currywurst from Berlin and the Ruhr area – and that's saying something. So my expectations were high when I ordered a "Smokey Joe's Currywurst red" with XXL airport fries. I wasn't in the mood for a beer that morning, so I had the sausage without one. It's served in small pieces, buried under a generous portion of sauce. As requested – I chose the mildest spice level – the sauce was barely spicy. The sausage had a good, not greasy flavor and tasted exactly as I'd imagined. In my opinion, the trick is not to completely overpower the sausage's flavor with the sauce, meaning to allow both components to retain their individual tastes despite the combination. Smokey Joe's manages this quite well. The crispy, golden-yellow fries are served in a small, wavy cardboard dish and placed on top of the sausage, along with the sauce and curry powder. The price-performance ratio is good, although at just under €7 it wasn't exactly a bargain. I was certainly full afterwards, even if it wasn't the healthiest meal of the day. 🙂

Key facts and conclusion

Smokey Joe's is open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM during the cold winter months, and from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM from April to October. Airport employees receive a 20% discount on their orders. Only cash payments are accepted. Contrary to the stereotype that currywurst is only for men, I can only recommend that female readers also stop by Smokey Joe's. Sure, you don't eat currywurst with fries every day, but it's perfectly acceptable now and then when you're in the mood for something a little less healthy. I actually quite enjoyed the sausage, and since the Smokey Joe's food truck changes location depending on events at the airport, I'll definitely keep an eye out for it on my next visit. Whether it really is the best currywurst in Munich, I'll leave for you to decide.
