Coffee and lunch at Boconero near the airport Stop number 11 on Bianca's Tasty Tour took me to Italy – without even boarding a plane. No, all I had to do was head to Departure Area H of Terminal 2 (behind security). Once there, my companion and I went to the Boconero restaurant. Boconero is a restaurant, bar, and – most importantly – a coffee brand all in one. It combines excellent Mediterranean cuisine with its own coffee blend, featuring carefully selected beans, elaborate brewing techniques, and various filtration methods. They offer traditional coffees like cappuccino, latte macchiato, and espresso, as well as modern creations such as flat white, café longo, café mocha, ristretto, and affogato. A brew bar is also part of Boconero. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? A culinary experience I was particularly looking forward to.
What can you expect at Munich Airport (Boconero)?
Italian flair, friendly service, and excellent cuisine. Add to that coffee, fresh cakes, sandwiches, baguettes, pizza, pasta, soups, salads, and much more – quite a selection. The house specialties, besides their own coffee brand, are the various pasta dishes and the different pizzas prepared to order. In the back, you can relax at cozy tables for two, at the bar, or at high tables, enjoy a coffee, indulge in delicious food, and unwind. There's also comfortable seating at the bar. Boconero serves as a place to stop for a coffee (or two), as well as a meeting point for a meal before or after your flight. In the front, the deli counter offers a variety of sandwiches, filled baguettes and rolls, quiche, cakes, desserts, macarons, tarts, and more. For everything offered at Boconero, regional and, of course, always high-quality ingredients are used whenever possible. The bar's main focus, however, is clearly on coffee. That's where the regionality of the beans ends, of course. Finding the right bean blend took a long time and some experimentation. Now the roast consists of an ideal blend of Guatemalan and Ethiopian beans.
Food and coffee offerings and my selection
Boconero boasts an extensive and well-curated menu. From homemade pizzas (from €11.90) – incidentally, the only one served à la minute behind airport security – to regularly changing regional fish dishes (with a side for €18.90), various appetizers (from €9.90), pasta (from €11.90), and desserts (from €1.90), there's something for everyone. They even offer "Coq au Vin" (rooster in wine, for €19.50). Currently, there are seven different pizzas, five different pasta dishes, and a variety of appetizers to choose from. Bruschetta with various toppings (from €7.50) is also available. There isn't a separate lunch menu at the moment, but they do offer a "Weekly Special." During my visit, the menu included pumpkin cream soup with coconut milk and Styrian pumpkin seed oil (€7.90), spaghetti tartufo with truffle and Parmesan (€16.90), and "Branzino"—sea bass with stir-fried vegetables (€18.90). The first two dishes sounded so delicious that I ordered them as a starter and main course. My companion, however, followed the charming restaurant manager's recommendation and ordered "Panzanella"—a tomato and bread salad with basil and capers (€9.90)—as well as a "Verdure" pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella, and grilled vegetables (€12.90).
Before we get to the food review, a quick detour to the coffee. Anyone offering good coffee can hardly avoid having a breakfast menu. And so, Boconero offers a select breakfast from 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. From €7.50 to €19.90, you can enjoy a delicious start to your day. Bircher muesli, a freshly blended berry smoothie, scrambled egg toast, an omelet, a salmon breakfast, or even the "Continental Breakfast" for two are available. You can also order coffee, which Boconero offers using four different brewing methods. Even if your passion for coffee and your coffee knowledge have been limited so far, you should definitely check out the wide range of brewing options at Boconero. Three different roasts of varying intensity (Boconero Single Origin for €6.90, Kenya Kirinyaga for €7.90, or Honduras Marcala for €8.90) are offered using filter brewing methods: V60, Chemex, Aeropress, or cold brew. We were recommended to try the Chemex method, which brews the coffee relatively quickly. (In contrast, the V60 method brews the coffee similarly, but much more slowly (for 8 minutes).) Each brewing method and coffee variety imparts a different flavor and coffee note. For coffee enthusiasts, the "Cold Brew Coffee" system set up on the bar is likely the highlight. For hours, drop by drop, the cold coffee makes its way through the ice into the carafe and can then be ordered – having been steeped for a long time and possessing a mildly bitter taste. While it's not really my thing, the whole experience was very impressive. So be sure to try a coffee, or even a cappuccino or latte macchiato.
Now, let's look at the dishes in detail….
Food review
Before our carefully selected dishes were served, we were presented with a bread basket containing two different types of bread (light and dark, fluffy and fresh). Of course, I always check whether the bread is freshly sliced and of high quality. Another indicator for me these days is whether I can resist eating it before my food arrives. Good bread rarely stays untouched. In the case of the Boconero bread, neither of us could resist, so I was glad that the soup and bread salad were served promptly. My well-portioned and attractively presented pumpkin soup was an instant hit. If you don't like things spicy (not hot!), you should mention this when ordering. The more I ate, the spicier it became. I could clearly taste both the pumpkin and a subtle hint of ginger. The mustard adds a special touch. A fantastic soup, and if you're looking for "just" a filling snack, this should satisfy you. My companion's bread salad not only looked fantastic, but tasted amazing too. The capers were omitted upon request, the portion was more than generous, and the bread had just the right amount of bite. Nobody likes soggy, stale bread – here, thanks in part to the crisp tomatoes, it was perfectly balanced.
It wasn't long before the empty appetizer plates were cleared away and the pizza and pasta were served. Again, the portions were generous, which should satisfy any hungry guest. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite finish my spaghetti, which was topped with three different truffle textures. (...I should have skipped the bread or half the soup...). They used truffle oil, truffle flakes and pieces, as well as truffle slices. Any truffle lover would be in heaven. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the truffle was plentiful, and the Parmesan served on the side was fresh and high-quality. My companion's pizza, which was already visually appealing, tasted fine. The crust was thin and not too crispy. They didn't skimp on the toppings, and all in all, it was a good pizza. Take a look at the photo gallery below.
Of course, we couldn't resist dessert and were treated to three different macarons and a strawberry tart. We also had two cappuccinos made with Chemex filter coffee. As I mentioned, I'm not the biggest coffee drinker, but I was genuinely impressed by this particular brew. So do yourself a favor and try a Boconero coffee specialty. The friendly staff will be happy to advise you.
Ambience
The ambiance is cozy and inviting. The pictures should convince you. An Italian bar atmosphere quickly takes hold at Boconero. Light colors, stylish wall coverings, sophisticated lamps, and friendly, bright lighting prevail. As mentioned, there are various seating areas to choose from. Whether you're looking for a relaxed meal, a quick espresso at the bar, or a short chat in the front café area with bistro tables – Boconero offers the perfect spot for every occasion. I felt very comfortable. What impressed me most was that I was able to completely forget about the "airport feeling." Unwinding or relaxing briefly before or after a flight is no problem here.
Hard facts and personal information
The Boconero, which opened in mid-July 2016, is operated in the same way as the one I have already tested. Restaurant „Cloud 7“ Boconero is run by Aichinger-Gastro GmbH. It's open from 5:00 AM to 10:30 PM. Menu items are available until 9:30 PM, while snacks and light meals are offered until closing. The restaurant seats 120 guests. You can enjoy your Boconero coffee on-site or take it home. Incidentally, Boconero is derived from "bocca nero," which means "black mouth" (referring to the coffee) in Italian. If you're in a hurry, all dishes can be packed for takeout. And for those looking for a small souvenir, Bavarian honey is available for purchase at the Boconero counter.
Now all that remains is for me to urge you to visit Boconero. The flair, the taste, the ambiance, and of course, most importantly, the coffee, are definitely worth a visit.
