The Hufnagel (formerly „Das Eggers“) at Pfanzeltplatz is a Bavarian restaurant which offers approximately 80 seats in the lower area (there are also seats upstairs) and impresses with Bavarian charm, antique tables, dark wood paneling, warm light, old mirrors and a cozy atmosphere.
Right at the entrance is a relatively large, spacious bar where you can enjoy a variety of cocktails. The tables are quite large, and tables for two are only available at the back, accessible by walking through the large front area with its long, wide tables. This rear section was added a few years ago and has a bit of a conservatory feel. Overall, the Hufnagel has a very cozy atmosphere in every seating area – provided you appreciate Bavarian flair.
There are also additional seats upstairs. Reservations aren't usually necessary at Hufnagel, except perhaps on weekends when they offer brunch. (Sunday brunch is quite nice – year-round between 10 am and 2 pm. Nothing groundbreaking or particularly unusual on the buffet, but worth a visit.) I recently dined at Hufnagel again in the evening and opted for the salad with goat cheese (three small pieces of round goat cheese – a generous portion) and bread, which I'm already familiar with. My companion had roast beef with onions and fried potatoes – also quite enjoyable. The food at Hufnagel has never once been disappointing or given cause for complaint. It offers "perfectly normal" Bavarian/German cuisine and is always served in ample portions. Together, we paid €41 for two main courses and three drinks (0.5 liters each), which is still reasonable. Hufnagel shouldn't get any more expensive. I'd also like to mention that Hufnagel provides a small glass of soup with every food order – a nice little complimentary touch – very thoughtful.
It's also lovely to sit in the Hufnagel's small, somewhat hidden beer garden in the summer sunshine and enjoy a delicious (definitely try it!) Kaiserschmarrn with applesauce (€8.80) – or, if that's not your thing, a Palatschinken (crepe), Apfelkiachal (apple fritters), or Dampfnudel (steamed dumplings) (averaging €6 each). The menu offers a well-balanced selection of main courses – from Spätzle/dumplings with gravy, to roast beef with crackling, pork, or onions, to fish, ham and noodles, and vegetarian Flammkuchen (tarte flambée). Daily changing business lunch specials are also available for €6.80 and €8.80.
The staff is friendly and efficient. We never had to wait long for our food or drinks. They're always happy to chat if they have the time and you're in the mood. Hufnagel accepts card payments – even if you just want to take away two slices of their delicious cakes. Give it a try!
