MARAIS SOIR – French dining in the Westend – Who among you has already dined at the French restaurant Marais Soir on Schwanthalerstrasse in the Westend district? I've had the pleasure of enjoying one of their delicious set menus twice, as well as several à la carte dishes. Since I always left the restaurant happy, full, and satisfied, I wanted to share my little, and always positive, journey to the "French Westend" with you.

I can honestly say that, in my opinion, the Marais Soir restaurant is one of the best the Westend district currently has to offer. Not only because of the cuisine and the culinary offerings on the regularly changing menu, but also because it skillfully combines professional yet relaxed service, a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, and a coherent overall concept – and has done so for almost six years. If anything is "pretentious" here, it's only in the best possible way, and the misconception ("Everything at a French restaurant is always so expensive and fussy.") is completely dispelled. On the contrary: From the moment I entered, my companion and I felt very welcome and warmly received. The friendly staff greets you right at the door, asks about your (highly recommended) reservation, and, depending on availability, lets you choose your own table.

A cozy atmosphere with harmonious decoration at Marais Soir

Divided into differently designed, cozy seating areas – dark furniture, subtle lighting, tasteful decor, fresh flowers on the tables – the entire restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere for individuals, couples, or larger groups. Marais Soir creates special menus for groups of 10 or more; otherwise, three- or four-course menus are available, along with a selection of à la carte dishes (starters from €9.50; intermediate courses from €16; main courses from €27). The somewhat staggered architecture gives guests a feeling of privacy and seclusion. Once you've found a spot – perhaps along the prominent bar near the entrance or in the more secluded rear section – the menu is presented. You won't be left thirsty for long either, as water, wine, and/or aperitifs are offered immediately. So, shall we take a look at the menu?

Food offer and selection

The positive impressions promised by the ambiance at the beginning of your stay are continued on the menu. Even a first glance at the clearly laid-out menu is a delight. The cooking is done in the kitchen designed for The Marais Soir restaurant, with its 40 seats, is run by owner Riccardo Asti and his four-person kitchen team. Apprentices also work in the kitchen. The creations and dishes are always fresh, varied, and modern. Anyone expecting only classic French cuisine is mistaken. Some very classic French dishes are given a Mediterranean twist, and the menu blends tradition with modernity.

Currently on the menu, for example, are rainbow trout with tomato and bread salad and edamame cream; white asparagus risotto with prawns; a beef duo with red wine sauce "Marchand de Vin"; and quark mousse with raspberry and rhubarb. On one of my visits, there was a trio of Arctic char with bulgur, bell pepper, and avocado cream; roasted quail breast on truffled "Venere" risotto; a duo of Irish dry-aged beef with red wine jus; and mascarpone mille-feuille with berries and sorbet. As you can see, anything but "typically classic French," right?

You can choose between three or four courses – starting at €48 or €56 respectively. With paired wines, the menus cost €63 or €76. Menu prices at Marais Soir are constantly adjusted to reflect the number of courses served. Only fresh, high-quality ingredients are used. Cooking and planning are done with seasonal ingredients that meet the high standards of the Marais Soir kitchen. If you require any special adjustments to your menu, or if you have any food allergies or intolerances, please let us know when ordering, and the kitchen will be happy to accommodate your needs.

My personal impression

As I mentioned earlier, I was very satisfied with both of my private visits – and so was my companion. In detail, I appreciated the charming and very relaxed service at the table; the personal presentation by owner Riccardo Asti for each main course; and the individual wine recommendations. Even if you opt out of the wine pairing and, for example, want to manage with just one bottle of wine for the entire evening, you'll receive an excellent recommendation – I really appreciated that. The high quality of the ingredients was immediately apparent, even with the amuse-bouche. They were consistently fresh, including the dessert, and the presentation of each course was neither overly elaborate nor too playful. Simplicity that is both pleasing and delicious.

One of my favorites during my visit.

On my second visit, I had one of my courses replaced with an à la carte dish (due to a food intolerance), and this was easily arranged. If possible, be sure to try the à la carte options as well. For example, on our second visit, my companion opted for six "Fine de Claire" oysters (for €19) followed by the "Marais Soir" fried egg on black truffle cream and lardo, a perennial favorite at Marais Soir. I was allowed to try it – delicious! The ambiance at Marais Soir provides the perfect setting for both business meetings and relaxed evenings for two or with the family. I will definitely return whenever I'm in the mood for French cuisine but want to start the evening in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The beef tartare is already on my "to-try" list, and Marais Soir is certainly high on my list of new Munich favorites. Be sure to take your time to study the aperitif menu and let yourself be tempted by one or two drinks.
