What does dry taste like? | Süddeutsche Zeitung Edition – Book presentation – The book "How Dry Tastes" is about wine. That alone was enough to pique my interest, given my passion for it. When I held the handy book in my hands and grasped the novel and informative approach of the author, Markus Del Monego, Germany's only World Sommelier Champion, I decided to read it. Now that I've almost finished, I'd like to encourage you – whether you're already a wine enthusiast or not – to take a look. Let me say upfront: "How Dry Tastes" is easy and accessible to read, and its only real risk – the only potential drawback – is that it might inspire you to enjoy a glass of wine, a wine tour, or a pleasant evening with friends, perhaps accompanied by wine.
With its nearly 180 pages, this book covers all the topics you'll quickly encounter if you develop an interest in wine – whether as a novice or a professional: from viticulture and winemaking to the cultural aspects of wine, interesting facts about wine, numerous suggestions for buying wine, explanations of terms, and also informative and entertaining anecdotes and experiments related to wine. It's a packed yet easily digestible work that approaches the subject of wine in a professional, refreshing, and innovative way. I highly recommend this book even to those who only encounter wine when the waiter at a restaurant asks, "Would you like a glass of wine?" No prior expertise is necessary.
Recipes, tips, anecdotes and much more…
The opening sentence alone, "...knowledge enables conscious enjoyment with all the senses...", immediately piqued my interest and elicited a resounding "absolutely!" In addition to the topics mentioned above, the book also addresses questions such as "How can you find the perfect wine and food pairing?", "What role does mineral water play at the table?" (...a big one!...), and even "Is wine healthy?" or "a good investment?". There's also a simple and (I've tried it!) delicious recipe for the perfect Christmas punch. Added value galore! 😉
Anyone interested in the world's wine stories, both grand and small, expert and profound, informative and exciting, will find great enjoyment in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and it was one of the few books (due to time constraints) that I actually read from cover to cover. Do I understand wine better now and know more? Absolutely! Of course, it's always up to you how much you personally learn and want to take away from books, including this one. I would be surprised if you didn't learn anything new from "How Dry Tastes" or at least pick up a few new conversation starters for interesting discussions.
Easy-to-read font and style
In my opinion, this book is perfect for anyone who enjoys reading, exploring new topics, and gaining a fresh perspective on facts about wine that they may already know. Wine is a wonderful thing, and its multifaceted nature and endless spectrum seem impenetrable and limitless when it comes to expert knowledge. "How Dry Tastes" offers new ways of thinking and imparts knowledge – all while bringing a smile to your face as you read.
