Bistro Andre in Rottach-Egern is very small and not easy to find for those unfamiliar with the area. It is very friendly and brightly decorated, and with approximately 8 tables, it's quite intimate.
The concise, handwritten menu was displayed on a small chalkboard and included approximately 10-15 dishes. Desserts offered Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) and mousse. There was also a selection of cakes, but these were already sold out when we arrived. Main courses included dishes such as pasta with porcini mushrooms, Wiener Schnitzel, pike-perch with spinach risotto, and beef steak – a small but excellent selection overall.
We opted for fish (a whole sea bream for €18.50) and king prawns with dip (€21). The sea bream was very tender and fresh – but unfortunately had a lot of bones – which isn't a criticism of the restaurant. The accompanying potatoes were served in a separate bowl. Perhaps a little more sauce would have been nice, but even without it, the dish wasn't at all dry.
The shrimp were also very fresh, the quantity was just right, and they were very tasty with the accompanying dips (garlic and herb). The accompanying garlic bread was crispy and fresh.
The service was very friendly, and we were quickly asked what we would like to drink and eat. After our meal, our empty plates were cleared promptly, and we were asked if we enjoyed our meal – which we certainly did. The prices are a bit steep, but it's worth it, and the food is delicious. The bistro's location is undoubtedly part of the price. Afterwards, a leisurely stroll along the lake is the perfect way to digest your meal.
All in all, I really enjoyed Bistro Andre and was very satisfied with the food. The atmosphere is friendly and pleasant, not pretentious or fussy. Card payment is accepted.
I'll be back: Yes, if I want something small and cozy, yet refined and "somewhat upscale". No, if I expect an extensive menu and prefer to dine in a "large/anonymous" setting at reasonable prices.
