Café Forum | Maxvorstadt Café Forum on Corneliusstrasse is a rather cozy and well-organized restaurant in Munich's Maxvorstadt district, transforming into a pleasant bar in the evenings for drinks and relaxed conversation. I've been there for breakfast, dinner, and drinks, and each time I've been satisfied, received friendly service, and left happy and satisfied.

Café Forum was renovated a few years ago, resulting in a brighter and much more inviting atmosphere. The Forum has been serving customers for over 22 years and offers delicious and varied breakfasts, business lunches, lunch specials (Monday to Friday, 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM), and a well-rounded dinner menu. A variety of delicious drinks are also available at the bar. In addition to the various lunch specials, there is a weekly changing soup (e.g., coconut milk and lemongrass soup) and a weekly special, such as guinea fowl breast, shrimp, chard and potato hash browns, etc. As mentioned, the regular menu offers a good mix of dishes. These include various appetizers and soups (smoked salmon, dim sum, warm vegetables, pumpkin soup, etc.), main courses such as Caesar salad, Forum salad with a choice of goat cheese, shrimp, or other toppings, duck, pumpkin strudel, entrecôte, etc.

The Forum's prices aren't exactly cheap, but they're not overpriced either. (Entrecôte, for example, is €19, pumpkin strudel €10.50, pumpkin soup €4.90 or €2.90 in a smaller portion, etc.). If none of that appeals to you, you can also choose from green spelt burgers, beef burgers, classic club sandwiches (see photo), roast beef, Wiener Schnitzel (€16.90), yellow Thai curry, or tagliatelle with strips of beef (€13.90). For dessert, Café Forum boasts Kaiserschmarrn (€8.00), apple strudel with vanilla sauce for a reasonable €4.30, cheesecake tarts with strawberry ice cream, warm chocolate tarts, or carrot cake. The service at Café Forum

The staff is very friendly and eager to fulfill all requests. As soon as you enter, you're attended to and offered a seat. However, we were always free to choose where we wanted to sit. We never had to wait long for our food or menus. Only once did I find the behavior of a server somewhat odd, or rather, a bit unhygienic, that the sugar bowls for each table were refilled by hand from a huge, open (!) sugar bowl. At the same time, a waiter jokingly threw bottle caps into the sugar bowl to annoy his colleague – a clever tactic in the long run, in my opinion, in front of the guests.

Small cards listing the available drinks are already on the tables. I've often opted for a Hugo (or even two...) and have always been satisfied. The food at Forum isn't groundbreaking, but it's definitely edible and worth ordering. For example, my pumpkin soup was a generous portion and deliciously intense in flavor – topped with a slightly doughy and chewy king prawn. Bread was served alongside. The Classic Club Sandwich my companion ordered was also perfectly acceptable in terms of both portion size and taste. It consisted of six slices of toast, cut lengthwise and filled with various ingredients (see photo).

The Forum is divided into three or four areas: The outdoor area – a large terrace with huge red parasols and plenty of outdoor tables. A dining area directly to the left upon entering the café with about 15 small, square wooden tables, comfortable white chairs, a suspended and elaborately lit ceiling, subtle lighting elements, and stylish pictures on the walls; another dining room with about eight to ten more tables, decorated with glass bead curtains along the entire wall, also with subtle lighting, and comfortable upholstered benches surrounding the small wooden tables. (I sat there twice alone with my companion and had the entire evening in peace.) The fourth area is to the right upon entering, with the large, square bar, the open kitchen area, the counter-like, high tables by the window, along the bar, and tucked away in the corner – all in all very cozy and with a warm, welcoming atmosphere throughout the entire dining area.

My personal conclusion

I would definitely recommend a visit to Café Forum. I've only been there once for breakfast – it was served on a plate tree and was delicious. The café is open from 8 a.m. to midnight, or 1 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The kitchen is open until 11:30 p.m. I haven't tried breakfast at Forum since the renovation. Perhaps I'll do so sometime and let you know how it goes.

Card payments are accepted at the Forum. Parking should be possible – despite the central location – with a little searching. Give it a try. There's really nothing to criticize, and with the right company, it will certainly be a great evening – perhaps even in a quiet corner.
